Utility Day 12th May 2007

PHOTO GALLERY

The MBCC extends thanks to former Club Secretary Lyn Norton for a truly descriptive article!

The weather forecast was wet and windy for our first Utility Day of 2007….and it was right.

Ann Jordan, our hostess, was fully prepared. The caravan – for all the Secretary bits n bobs - was already set up complete with awning ready for the day ahead.

Tony and I arrived and went to park in the designated field. It really should have obvious that a Transit van (unladen weight 2½ tons) carrying 2 people, 12 dogs and all the paperwork necessary for the day was going to have a problem on the wet ground...but that didn’t stop us trying to park next to Ann’s van. Making a long story very much shorter...we had to go through the gate at the bottom of the field and park behind the caravan. Life is full of swings and roundabouts. More of this later.

Huge thanks must go to the committee members present on the day: Ann Jordan, Diane & Darren Savage, Joan Cattell and Tony Blick (I was there too, honest!)

We were, with our combined talents and experience, able to provide and complete testing in Breed Conformation Assessments; KC Good Citizen Bronze, Silver & Gold; Agility; Gundog; Reliability; and Obedience, all the while dodging in and out of the frequent downpours!

We had 4 new members join us on the day and they, along with long standing members, had a relaxing day filled with personal achievement.

Ann provided us all with an excellent lunch, and still only charged £1.00 per person. We also should thank Ann’s mum and son for all their help with the catering.

All too soon, the day was over and everyone was leaving... then we return to the story of the Transit and the mud...

Darren had managed to get his van out of the field (he and Diane have a similar van to Ann’s, both of which are front wheel drive .. a lot lighter than the rear wheel drive Transit.. (You know where this is going, don’t you? And it’s not out of the same gate that Darren drove out of!)

I had a couple of attempts to drive out of that gate – under the ‘expert guidance’ of one Tony Blick – I just knew the van was not going through that particular exit, then Tony decided he could do it. Oops. No can do.

Finally, Tony hit upon the idea to go out through the gate from which we’d entered the field...and once he’d extricated the van from the multitude of bald patches he’d made...that’s exactly what he did.

So Ann, I apologise for the mess we made...it took 2 of us to do all that!!

Here’s hoping that 29th September is a drier day, we look forward to seeing you then.

Lyn Norton
