We Thank You

Winner of 'Recognition for Border Collie's Heritage' Auld Hemp and Adam Telfer poetry competition,
reproduced by kind permission of the author

I stood there on the hillside, wind blowing cold and chill,
I wondered why I was there, of course, it is the thrill
of watching my old sheepdog, the venerable and wise
collecting sheep and gathering, that focus in his eyes.
The focus only this breed has, the Border Collie, sure,
the only one so capable of helping me and more
than that, the love he gives, the loyalty and trust,
if ever there's a dog for man the collie is the "must"

But where did he learn this craft of his, where did he get the knack
of knowing exactly what to do on hillside, field and track?
From one great dog, the master, the father of them all
the grand Old Hemp, that handsome dog, the one that took the call.
That followed faithfully his man, that helped both night and day
that worked by his side through fair and foul, whatever came their way.

We thank you Adam Telfer for giving us the best,
from that great dog the sheepdog came, and we all know the rest.
The gift, the trust, the will to please that now we all adore,
the Border Collie at its best, no-one could ask for more.
Without Old Hemp where would we be, where would our history lead?
It would not be so wonderful without our precious breed.
"Man's best friend" is fitting and the cap sits squarely there
upon the head of Old Hemp who gave us the dogs we share.
